Festival Attendance Statistics: Global, UK, French and Australian Benchmarks

Compare festival attendance, tourism, capacity, fill rates and ticket trends across major international music events.

Festival attendance statistics show how differently audiences gather around live music. In 2024, Tomorrowland Belgium welcomed 400,000 people across two weekends, while Ultra Music Festival Miami recorded 165,000 attendees over three days. Regional data adds another perspective: Australian contemporary music festivals recorded 2,011,084 attendances in 2024, and French festivals averaged 8,181 spectators.

Global festival benchmarks

Large festivals can be measured by total attendance, number of days, audience origin or the number of weekends used to stage the event. Those measures are not interchangeable, but together they describe the scale and reach of an event.

Tomorrowland Belgium welcomed 400,000 People of Tomorrow across two weekends in 2024. Its audience came from more than 200 countries, and the festival operated over two festival weekends. These figures come from Tomorrowland 2024 - Global Journey & Discover Europe (Tomorrowland).

Ultra Music Festival Miami drew 165,000 attendees over three days in 2024. More than 100 countries were represented among its attendees, according to Ultra Music Festival 2024: Jon Bon Jovi joins Armin van Buuren, Calvin Harris returns, Peggy Gou RESISTANCE debut & more (Ultra Music Festival).

Summerfest reported 555,925 fans during its 2024 festival. Its total is larger than the attendance reported for the three-day Ultra event, but the supplied figure does not describe the same number of festival days or the same attendance-counting method. Summerfest also reported that 21% of its 2024 patrons entered through one of 14 free-admission promotions. The source is Summerfest Celebrates Music, New Sponsors, Enhancements and Community Impact, Despite Weather Dampening 2024 Festival Attendance (Summerfest).

Osheaga 2024 attracted more than 147,000 festivalgoers over three days. That provides a useful three-day comparison with Ultra Music Festival Miami, although Osheaga’s published figure is stated as “more than” 147,000 rather than as an exact total. The source is OSHEAGA | Relive 2024 (Osheaga).

UK attendance and music tourism

UK live-music statistics distinguish between an attendance at an event and a music tourist: a person travelling to attend live music. In 2022, UK live-music events attracted 14.4 million music tourists. Domestic music tourists accounted for 13.3 million of that total, while foreign music tourists accounted for 1.1 million.

The same 2022 research recorded 37.1 million attendances at UK festivals and concerts. Festivals accounted for 6.5 million music-fan attendances, while concerts recorded 30.6 million attendances, covering arena shows through grassroots gigs. These figures are reported in Here, There and Everywhere 2023 by UK Music (UK Music). The tourism figures and event-attendance figures describe related but different measures, so they should not be added together.

The Edinburgh Festival Fringe illustrates the scale of a multi-venue cultural festival. It issued more than 2.6 million tickets in 2024 and registered 3,746 shows. Artists and audiences came from more than 65 countries, and the event had 1,800 accredited arts-industry members. These are 2024 figures from As the 2024 Fringe closes – an open letter from Chief Executive, Shona McCarthy (Edinburgh Festival Fringe). Ticket issues are not presented as a unique-person attendance count, and the Fringe’s broad programme makes it different from a single-site music festival.

France: attendance, capacity and fill rates

French festival reporting provides unusually useful context around capacity and financial conditions. In the 2024 survey, 877 festivals responded. Ninety-five percent took place as planned, while 2% were cancelled. Among 834 festivals held as planned, 10% reported indirect disruption from the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The average attendance among the French festivals analyzed was 8,181 spectators in 2024, compared with a median attendance of 2,177. The gap between the average and median indicates that larger festivals raised the average above the midpoint festival. Attendance size therefore varies substantially within the surveyed group.

Twenty-six percent of French festivals had a fill rate above 90% in 2024, and 44% reported a higher fill rate than in the previous year. Strong demand did not eliminate financial pressure: 48% of French music and humor festivals reporting budget data ran a deficit. Even among festivals with fill rates above 90%, 44% reported a deficit. These results are from Le Centre national de la musique dresse un bilan anticipé des festivals en 2024 en partenariat avec le ministère de la Culture (Centre national de la musique).

The 2025 French panel contained responses from 947 festivals, about half of them current-music festivals, and 869 festivals actually took place. Seventy-nine percent of festivals that held a 2025 edition reported encountering difficulties. Financial problems were reported by 80% of festivals that encountered difficulties, while 36% reported weather or other natural hazards.

Capacity was unchanged from the prior edition for 71% of French festivals in 2025. Average attendance rose to 8,707 spectators, and the average fill rate was 80%. Thirty-six percent reported a fill rate of at least 90%, while half of festivals responding on fill rates reported an increase. These 2025 figures come from Pour la deuxième année consécutive, le Centre national de la musique dresse un bilan anticipé des festivals pour 2025 en partenariat avec le ministère de la Culture (Centre national de la musique).

Australia’s contemporary festival trend

Australian contemporary music festival attendance shows large changes across the reported years. Attendances were 1,028,170 in 2010, 984,946 in 2011, 1,169,233 in 2012 and 1,281,339 in 2014. The reported total then fell to 672,771 in 2016 before reaching 1,447,836 in 2019.

The series records 437,472 attendances in 2020. It then rose to 1,537,353 in 2022 and 2,030,130 in 2023. In 2024, Australian contemporary music festivals recorded 2,011,084 attendances, a reported 0.9% decrease from 2023.

The 2024 Australian figures also include $331.3 million in ticket revenue and an average ticket price of $180.75. The attendance series and revenue measures are from 2024 Live Performance Australia_Ticket Attendance and Revenue Report (Live Performance Australia). The figures cover the report’s category of Australian contemporary music festivals and should not be treated as a complete count of every festival format in the country.

Major festival attendance snapshots

Venue-level reporting shows that “festival attendance” includes events with very different audience sizes. At IFEMA Madrid in 2024, Madrid Salvaje recorded 51,014 visitors, Blackworks Festival recorded 25,824, Time Warp Festival recorded 17,368, Nostalgia Milenial Fest recorded 16,198 and Black Coffee recorded 15,493. Jackies Festival recorded 4,892 visitors.

These figures are visitor counts for named events at the same venue and year, making them a compact comparison set. They come from IFEMA MADRID | ANNUAL REPORT 2024 (IFEMA Madrid). They should not be compared directly with multi-weekend or multi-day totals without checking the underlying counting period.

Glastonbury Festival listed a capacity of 210,000 for its 2024 edition. Capacity is a limit or planned scale, not the same thing as the number of people who attended. The figure is from Glastonbury Festival - History 2024 (Glastonbury Festival).

Free programming can materially change the size of an event’s total audience. Adelaide Festival’s free events, exhibitions and installations drew 391,175 people in 2024. Its ticketed and free events together drew a total audience of 457,505. The free component is therefore a major part of the reported festival audience, but the source does not define it as paid ticket attendance.

These Adelaide figures are from the 2023 - 24 Annual Report - Adelaide Festival (Adelaide Festival). Summerfest offers another paid-and-free reference point: 21% of its 2024 patrons entered through one of 14 free-admission promotions. Its total reported attendance was 555,925 fans.

Regional comparisons are most useful when the measurement basis is kept visible. Tomorrowland’s 400,000 people covered two weekends, Ultra’s 165,000 covered three days, and Osheaga’s more than 147,000 covered three days. Adelaide’s 457,505 combined audience included free events, exhibitions and installations, while Glastonbury’s 210,000 was a listed capacity. These distinctions help explain why a single ranking of festival attendance can obscure how each audience figure was produced.
